The Vanguard Australian Shares Index ETF (ASX: VAS) is the grandaddy of Exchange Traded Funds with $14,385.5 million in Funds Under Management (FUM).  It also has a useful income distribution yield.

The ETF tracks the top 300 companies listed on the ASX. It is heavily weighted toward financials and materials (resources) stocks. It is a Passively managed ETF.

Investors gain a diversification to a broad range of Australian shares.

For investors requiring exposure to large Australian stocks, the annual returns have been in the 9% – 12% per annum range. As the ETF does not have US technology stocks in the mix the returns have been more modest.

However, when income distribution is included the total return is highly competitive.

It has a Return on Equity of 12.96% and a distribution/dividend yield of 3.83% per annum.
