Altamin Puts Italy On The Lithium Map With Maiden Resource

Altamin Ltd (ASX: AZI) has provided Italy with its first-ever lithium resource of more than 2 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE).

The Lazio Geothermal Lithium Project’s bounty extends beyond lithium, with a sulphate of potash (SOP) equivalent resource of ~327 million tonnes.

Altamin’s maiden resource is based on the interpretation of historical well-field data and desktop technical assessments of various process options.

Battery-grade lithium produced

The company also conducted bench-scale direct lithium extraction and crystallisation test work on both high and low-grade Lazio brines.

Significantly, bench-scale testing produced battery-grade lithium carbonate crystals.

Shifting gears to SOP, a desktop analysis indicated that commercial methods will be suitable for SOP production from the Lazio brines.

Potential for geothermal energy

The Lazio project extends over the Cesano geothermal field which was drilled for geothermal energy in the 1970s and 1980s.

Altamin Managing Director Geraint noted that the mineral endowment is accompanied by a geothermal estimate of between 140 and 350 MWe of potentially recoverable electrical energy.

This may enable any future extraction processes to have a low carbon footprint.

Next steps

Altamin’s analyses and interpretations are all based on an extensive literature review of the geothermal exploration activities performed in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

To confirm these evaluations, drilling activities must be carried out.

Altamin will direct wells toward the rock volumes in which there is a high probability of encountering lithium-rich geothermal brines such as volcanic pipes.

Before drilling, it is planned to carry out geophysical surveys to identify the volcanic pipes and better define the depth of the carbonate basal complex.

Altamin had cash of A$1.86 million on 31 December 2023.
